Dr Lana Kossoff

Dr Lana Kossoff graduated with Honours from the University of New South Wales in 1982.  She received the John Kerridge Memorial Prize in Psychiatry for best performance as an undergraduate.

She trained in Psychiatry at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Northside Clinic and Macquarie Hospital, attaining Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, FRANZCP, in 1993.  She became an Associate Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Medical Administrators in 1995.

As a Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr Kossoff first worked as the Unit Director in the Aged Care Psychiatry Admission Unit, Macquarie Hospital and she then took up the position of Director of Clinical Services/Medical Superintendant of Macquarie Hospital, providing overall clinical direction of the organisation.  In 1997 she was promoted to the position of Executive Director where she was responsible for clinical, financial and administrative leadership of Macquarie Hospital, a 180-bed hospital specialising in the treatment of mental illness.  She resigned in 2002 to work in clinical and medico-legal settings.

Dr Kossoff currently works in a private medico-legal practice. She has provided in excess of 3000 medico-legal assessments for Government bodies, Solicitors and Insurers.

Dr Kossoff has also worked in various clinical settings. She was the Clinical Director of the Specialist Mental Health Service for Older Persons at Sutherland Hospital and a Visiting Medical Officer who provided a clinical outreach service to the Hunter New England and Northern Rivers Local Health Districts across inpatient and community settings. She currently works in a private clinical practice providing telehealth services across NSW including running a Memory Assessment Clinic affiliated with the AdNet dementia network. She has extensive experience in and is a published author on telepsychiatry.

Dr Kossoff is a member of the Faculty of Psychiatry of Old Age and Foundation Fellow of the Faculty of Forensic Psychiatry, Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists. Dr Kossoff’s experience in administrative, forensic and clinical psychiatry (as a psychiatrist who specialises in Older Age Clients), provides strong foundations for the specialist assessment of testamentary capacity, medical negligence cases, workplace injuries and motor accident injuries. She lectures regularly on these topics to lawyers, doctors and case managers.
